Knaresborough to become Dementia Friendly Community

People in Knaresborough will have the opportunity during 2018 to find out how to make their town more Dementia Friendly.

A new steering group led by Sharon Calvert has been set up to start working on Dementia Friendly projects across the town. The group aims to increase local awareness and understanding of the condition which affects almost 10,000 people in North Yorkshire. It plans to offer Dementia Friends sessions, social media information through Twitter and Facebook and is planning a Memory Walk in its first year.

Sharon Calvert, Lead on the Knaresborough Dementia Friendly Steering group, said:

“Knaresborough has a wonderful community spirit and it is important that everyone realises the challenges facing people affected by dementia.

“A Dementia Friendly Community is a perfect way of raising awareness and offering people the support in the place where they live.”

Alzheimers Society Service Manager, Alison Wrigglesworth, said:

“We are delighted to be able to support this initiative that has come from local people who want to make a difference. Dementia Friendly Communities are a brilliant way to help support people to live well in their own towns and villages as they spread awareness about dementia and how everyone can take action that can make a real difference to people‘s lives.”

Anyone who would like to get involved in the Dementia Friendly Knaresborough project can contact Sharon Calvert on 07811 383041
