Support on offer from British Red Cross for older people in Harrogate and Rural District

The British Red Cross is offering a free befriending and enabling service in Harrogate and Rural District.

The charity is supporting those in the area – Masham, Ripon, Pateley Bridge, Boroughbridge and Harrogate – aged 65 and over. It offers practical support and companionship for older people, enabling them to live independently in their homes and communities.

The British Red Cross Independent Living Service for the Harrogate and Rural District can:

  • Provide shopping services
  • Deliver medication
  • Provide a befriending service (currently at a distance and over the telephone due to COVID-19)
  • Signpost service users to other relevant organisations within the community

Funded by North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group, the service is open to self-referrals and referrals from health professionals and GP surgeries. Coordinators and volunteers take part in a comprehensive training programme.

Referrals to the service made by GPs, hospital-supported discharge teams and health and social care professionals.
