How to access NHS health services over the bank holiday

It's essential to plan ahead to ensure you have access to the healthcare services you might need. Healthwatch North Yorkshire is here to guide you on how to prepare and use available resources effectively.

Use the NHS App to help manage your health

The NHS App is a free, secure tool that allows you to manage aspects of your healthcare from your smartphone or tablet. You can:

Dental services: What to do in an emergency

If you need urgent dental care over the Easter weekend, you should not go to A&E unless it’s a life-threatening emergency. Instead:

  • Call a local dentist – they will have an out-of-hours message with advice.
  • If you don’t have a dentist or can’t reach one, call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk. They can help you find an emergency dental service.

More information is available at NHS dental services.

British Sign Language users: Accessing NHS 111

If you use British Sign Language (BSL), you can still get medical help over the bank holiday using the NHS 111 BSL service.

Visit www.signvideo.co.uk/nhs111 to:

  • Make a video call with a BSL interpreter
  • Get the same help you would via a 111 call
  • Access it 24/7

Mental health crisis – Important number change

Please note: the crisis line number changed earlier this year.

If you or someone you know is in a mental health crisis, you should now call NHS 111 and select the mental health option.

The old number (0800 0516 171) is no longer in use.

This new service connects you directly with trained mental health professionals, any time, day or night.

Essentials to keep at home

It’s worth making sure you’ve got some basic supplies for minor illnesses and injuries:

  • Paracetamol
  • Plasters
  • Indigestion remedies
  • Anti-diarrhoeal tablets

Your local pharmacist can help you choose what’s right for your household.

Emergency care – Know where to go

  • Life-threatening emergencies: Call 999 or go to A&E.
  • Not sure what to do? Use NHS 111 online or call 111 for advice.
