Latest A&E waiting and admission times revealed - our response

At Healthwatch North Yorkshire, we know how important it is for people to access timely and effective urgent care when they need it.
A&E services under pressure – locally and aationally
Across England, A&E attendances rose to 2.3 million in April—up 2.5% compared to the same time last year. However, only 74.8% of patients were admitted, transferred or discharged within the NHS’s four-hour target time. This drops to 60.2% in major A&E departments, showing just how stretched services are across the country.
Over 44,000 patients nationally experienced delays of more than 12 hours from the point of decision to admit to being admitted—a key indicator of pressure on hospital beds and flow.
So how did hospitals serving North Yorkshire perform?

Healthwatch response
“At Healthwatch, we hear every week from people who are worried about long waits in A&E. The latest figures for April 2025 show that many emergency departments remain under significant pressure, with only 60% of patients in major A&Es seen, treated or admitted within four hours.
Behind these statistics are real experiences—people in pain, families waiting for updates, and NHS staff working flat out under challenging conditions.
It’s clear that hospitals across our region are seeing thousands of people each month, and many are struggling to meet the four-hour target. While we know staff are doing their best, there’s still work to do to make services more responsive and accessible.
If you've recently used A&E or urgent care services, your feedback can make a real difference. Whether your experience was positive or could have been better, we want to hear from you. What you share helps us push for changes that matter to patients.
