Registered managers in adult social care

A look at their support and development requirements

Did you know that 80% of registered managers feel that their role has changed over time and 61% said they are feeling fatigued?

Unsurprisingly, the adult social care sector is experiencing ongoing service pressures, in part due to the pandemic and its after-effects. The current recruitment crisis makes it increasingly difficult for registered managers to manage their service and look after their mental health and well-being.

Through a survey and focus groups, we explored what challenges registered managers are facing, what is working well in their jobs, as well as where further training and support is needed and what the recommendations are.

This report pulls together the feedback we received via our survey and focus groups as well as additional literature on this topic and what other councils and the NHS currently have in place to support managers locally.

The findings and recommendations set out in this report are aimed at helping North Yorkshire County Council develop an action plan of support for registered managers. The research and analysis was undertaken between January and June of this year, with an initial report provided to the Council in July 2022.

We would like to thank Healthwatch North Yorkshire for producing this report and in response we have established a multi-agency group to produce an action plan to explore the key findings and agree how we might progress the recommendations highlighted in the report.
